LAWRENCEBURG, TN – A Lawrence County Election Commissioner has resigned from his post. Chris Jackson stepped down from his position on the county’s election commission earlier this week. Lawrenceburg resident James Wallace was appointed to fill Jackson’s seat. Jackson issued the following statement regarding his resignation:
Serving as an Election Commissioner for Lawrence County these past two years has been an honor. Working with a dedicated bipartisan team to protect the integrity of our elections has been a truly fulfilling experience. As I’ve always said, you can’t just love your country when you win—democracy has to work for everyone, every time.
However, new opportunities have recently come my way, including a political radio show, a social media partnership, and the potential exploration of a future run for local office. These activities align with my passions but could reasonably be seen as partisan. While I am deeply committed to the integrity of this work, I understand the importance of the Commission remaining neutral to maintain public trust.
For that reason, I’ve decided to step down from my role as Election Commissioner, effective September 23, 2024, at 4:00 PM. This will allow me to explore these opportunities freely, while ensuring the Commission continues to operate without any perception of bias.
As Chairman of the Lawrence County Democratic Party, it’s my honor to nominate James Wallace to State Commissioner Bennie Smith to serve out the remainder of my term until April. If confirmed, James would become the first person of color to serve on the Board—an historic and truly meaningful milestone for our community, especially at a time when we need to come together.
It’s been an honor to serve, and I’ll always stand by the principles that make democracy work—fairness, integrity, and ensuring every voice is heard, win or lose.
