LAWRENCEBURG, TN – The Lawrenceburg City Council unanimously voted last week to pass an ordinance to decrease the speed limit on US 43 (South Locust Avenue) to 45 mph beginning at the current 45 mph signage and extending to the south city limits. “The number of accidents on this stretch of highway has been a growing concern, and we have been working diligently for this speed amendment,” said Councilman Aaron Story. “We understand this is not a complete solution, but it’s an important first step. The safety of our citizens is paramount, and I appreciate the cooperation of TDOT and the City Council.”
In January 2024, the TDOT Region 3 Traffic Office completed a comprehensive traffic study on US 43, analyzing crash data from December 2020 to December 2023. The study revealed 28 crashes, including one fatality and several injuries, with speed being a significant factor in many incidents. To enhance safety, the Traffic Office recommended a reduction in the speed limit on US 43 and improvements to advance warning signage, including a new advisory speed of 45 mph.
“Balancing smart growth with safe and efficient traffic operations is essential in a flourishing community like Lawrenceburg,” said Jay Norris, TDOT Assistant Chief Engineer and Region 3
Director. “If motorists continue to travel at excessive speeds, we risk more serious accidents. Our commitment to engineering, enforcement, and education will guide our efforts to enhance road safety in partnership with Lawrenceburg leadership.”
The new speed change will be enforced and speeding tickets issued beginning October 6, 2024.
