Search Ends in Tragedy After Man’s Body Recovered from Buffalo River

WAYNESBORO, TN — A 20-year-old man drowned Saturday afternoon in the Buffalo River, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched around 3:30 p.m. following reports of a possible drowning on the river.

Authorities later recovered the man’s body from the water. The sheriff’s office has requested an autopsy to determine the official cause of death, although investigators said no foul play is suspected at this time.

The Wayne County Emergency Management Agency, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and Lawrenceburg Fire Department Dive Team responded and assisted the sheriff’s office at the scene.

The victim’s identity has not been released while authorities work to notify his next of kin.

“Please keep the family of the victim and first responders in your thoughts and prayers as they process this tragedy,” the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
